Quarterly economic development update: $2.5 million grant for Bristol South park and hiring expo drew 500 job seekers

Clay Walker, director of NETWORKS, told commissioners the county continues to secure state and other grants to ready sites for industry, citing a recent $2.5 million award for Bristol South Industrial Park and a $100,000 grant tied to a property the county purchased on Airport Parkway.

Walker said the county and partners pursue a repeatable playbook — applying for due-diligence grants that support larger investments — and noted that a small $100,000 grant can help make the case for multimillion-dollar follow-on investments. "Between the two grants we got $2.6 million," he said, describing coordinated work with the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development and local authorities.

He highlighted ongoing site development: transloading discussions near VAE and Burlington Junction Railway, active marketing of a Tri-County Park site, and new construction tied to A.Y. McDonald relocating operations to Sullivan County. Walker said the A.Y. McDonald move is expected to retain and add jobs, with a rough estimate of 75 to 90 positions tied to that facility.

Walker also said a Northeast Tennessee hiring expo in MeadowView drew about 86 employers and roughly 500 job seekers, and he reported continued success in partnering across municipal and regional entities to attract grant funding and prospects.
