Parks and Recreation staff report rising participation and recap Corona 5000

Recreation staff told the Parks and Recreation Commission that participation across many programs increased year over year and gave a rundown of recent and upcoming events.
Miss Finch, the recreation presenter, summarized April and March programming: senior-center events (96 participants at a St. Patrick's Day event), a second annual music-and-arts festival scheduled for the HCC front lawn, guided hikes and a Golden Egg scavenger hunt (10 eggs hidden, eight recovered), and the delivery of the seasonal Corona Connection magazine. She reported Q3 metrics showing growth in facility reservations and senior programming and said the city logged more than 4,000 participants at senior-center activities and nearly 11,000 drop-in visits for the quarter.
Regel Carr, recreation coordinator for special events, presented the inaugural Corona 5000 5K (March 21) and said the race began on historic Sixth Street, finished in front of the Civic Center Theater and included more than 30 exhibitors. Carr reported roughly 2,700 race finishers and estimated total day attendance — including spectators — at about 5,500. Carr said participants ranged in age from 1 to 87 and included out-of-state and international entrants.
Commissioners praised the event organization and the broader programming. Vice Chair McBride and Commissioner Munos described the race as well-run and said the community-building aspects were particularly valuable. No public speakers addressed these items during the meeting.
Staff said they will present a co-sponsorship recommendation to city council for July–December events and will provide additional reports (CIP annual report, Circle City Center transition, aquatics update) at upcoming meetings.
