Council adopts budget amendments, accepts multiple grants and agrees to apply for $9M DOD grant for new fire station

Niceville’s council approved several budget amendments and grant-related actions authorizing staff to proceed with projects ranging from school-safety infrastructure to fire-station construction.
City staff explained budget changes that add $106,800 of design and engineering services for the Dear Moss Creek fire station (about $13,000 in cash; the rest in in-kind services), a $10,000 donation from the Wise Foundation for paramedic training equipment, $17,400 paid by a new Catholic school to help fund a new school zone on Valp Boulevard, and a $268,942 state grant for a watershed master plan with a local match. The council voted to adopt the amended budget.
Separately, the council authorized staff to apply for a Department of Defense Defense Community Infrastructure Program construction grant—about $8.9 million—to fund the Deer Moss Creek Fire Station 22 and emergency equipment storage. City Manager said the city had fixed prior application deficiencies and secured necessary ownership and letters of support to strengthen this year’s application.
Council members also discussed implementation details: the school zone will be installed on a public road and the Catholic school volunteered to pay half the installation cost; stormwater grant match details and a final payment to complete Hill Lane were all clarified during council discussion.
The vote on the DOD grant application and on the budget ordinance was unanimous; staff will proceed to finalize grant applications and manage the budget changes.
