Niceville’s City Council approved a 30-year electric franchise with Florida Power & Light on a unanimous vote, updating the city’s long-standing utility agreement as the prior contract nears expiration.
City Manager said the agreement, negotiated over months with FPL and city staff, modernizes operating standards and provides “enhanced legal protections” while maintaining continuity of service. “This was a partnership between Steve and I and FPL, and I’d recommend approval of this new 30‑year franchise agreement,” the manager told the council.
Councilmembers asked whether the deal would accelerate removal of obsolete poles and help coordinate removal of other carriers’ attachments. Staff said FPL is already removing poles identified by the city and that the city will work with other providers to clear remaining attachments so old poles can be taken down.
The council approved the ordinance by voice vote with all members recorded in favor. The ordinance authorizes the mayor to execute the franchise and directs staff to coordinate implementation and follow-up with utility partners.
The council recorded no public opposition during the meeting. The next administrative step is execution of the ordinance and staff follow-up on pole‑removal coordination with third‑party cable and broadband providers.
