Robera Figuro read a staff letter explaining the school’s history, Link Learning recognition and the practical costs of a renaming (logos, signage, uniforms, digital systems and documents). The letter estimated replacement costs “over $150,000” and urged honoring Dr. Margaret Hill by naming a wellness center on campus rather than changing the school’s name.
Board members debated policy, precedent and community attachment to school names. Several members said high schools should generally not be renamed after individuals; Mr. Tilman asked staff to bring the relevant policy language back for review and recommended sending the item to the policy subcommittee. Staff and a facilities representative gave initial cost estimates for phased replacement of materials and signage (facility staff suggested $40,000–$60,000 for some initial signage items; school staff estimated higher comprehensive costs).
Without a unanimous vote required by existing policy language for naming buildings, the board chose not to take action on renaming and directed the policy subcommittee to review and propose revised naming language for board consideration.
