During the staff update at the April 14 meeting, a city staff member reported that the state has enacted a requirement that cities allow detached accessory dwelling units (ADUs) on parcels of 11,000 square feet or larger.
Staff told the commission that Roy City already has allowed internal ADUs and has processed several since that policy passed; the new state rule applies to detached ADUs and will require the city to adopt a zoning response to comply. Commissioners discussed the scope and said staff should prepare code language to meet the mandate while considering local implementation details such as parking and lot-size limits.
The staff update was informational; the commission did not take a formal vote on ADU policy at the meeting. Staff reported eight internal ADU approvals since the local allowance and said detached ADU permitting and zoning changes will be considered in upcoming sessions.
