Sunset Beach councilors on April 13 debated whether to replace aging decorative streetlights on the island with grid-powered decorative fixtures or invest in solar-powered poles designed to remain lit during power outages.
Public works presented a solar option for streetscape lighting that staff estimated at about $79,458 for the streetscape components and a total over $100,000 when gazebo and additional fixtures are included. Staff said the vendor projected a multi-year payback and promised warranties on heads/poles and battery life estimates of 10–12 years. “You’re looking at five years” to see a return on the solar investment, staff reported, describing the option as more resilient in storms because solar poles remain illuminated even when grid power fails.
Police leadership framed the decision as a public-safety choice. As the police chief put it, “With storms... an option that would allow us to continue to have light is going to be the most safe,” arguing that reliable lighting helps emergency response and pedestrian safety on the island when outages occur.
Council members expressed support for the resiliency benefits but voiced concern about the upfront cost relative to other capital needs (notably streets). Members asked staff for a full installed-price analysis that includes installation labor, equipment rental or lift costs, ongoing maintenance, battery‑replacement timelines and a realistic payback schedule. Staff said ordering in July could permit installation by December.
What happens next: staff will produce a detailed cost/benefit analysis and installation plan (including expected labor, warranty details and lifecycle costs) to inform budget decisions; council signaled interest in solar for safety but asked for clearer numbers before any appropriation.
