The Del City Board of Adjustment voted April 13 to approve a building-code variance allowing the conversion of a one-car garage at 3000 Chatwood Drive into a primary/mother-in-law suite, with a condition that the applicant construct an accessory storage building to replace lost garage storage.
City staff (Gina) told the board that applicant Brandon Bat requested the conversion and said the change “will open up new housing options for the residents of the city of Del City by allowing more flexibility with rooms and livable space.” Staff recommended approval of variance BABC 216-26, contingent on permitting and construction of an accessory building to make up for lost garage storage.
Board members asked whether the driveway needed widening and whether the conversion had already been completed; staff said the driveway is in acceptable condition and that the conversion had not been done. The board opened and then closed the public hearing on the application; no outside public comments were recorded. When the board moved to approve the application, members specified the amendment that any replacement storage structure be at least 10 by 10 feet and sit on a concrete pad. The motion passed by voice vote.
The applicant must secure required permits for both the conversion and the accessory storage building and meet any inspection requirements set by city staff.
