Land Bank approves shed relocation and backs East Creek farm expansion

The Nantucket Land Bank Commission voted to approve relocating a farm shed to the proposed siting on the Pine Road parcel and heard an operational update from the farm operating at 5 West Creek.

The presenter, speaking for the farm, described recent on-site work and new marketing plans, saying, “we got our wholesale pork license, which was um took a lot of work and we're really excited about,” and outlined pasture improvements, rotational grazing and plans to install high tunnels once an archaeological survey clears the site.

The commission debated visual impacts and vehicle visibility at the proposed shed location. Commissioners asked how often cars would be present and whether parking behind the structure would keep vehicles out of public view. The presenter said workshops would likely run mostly on weekends and that regular parking would be limited: “we won't more more won't have more than two or three cars behind it.”

After discussion about tradeoffs between tucking the building back versus keeping cars hidden, a motion to approve the siting as presented was made and seconded; the commission voted in favor.

The farm representative also described a new retail lease adjacent to 5 West Creek that will let the operation sell wholesale and retail products—salted pork cuts, bay scallops, honey and spice blends—and share retail space with other island farmers. He said staff and partners have supported infrastructure work (power, fencing) and that a state archaeological survey (with an expected backlog) must occur before some grant-funded high-tunnel work can begin.

Next steps: staff will record the vote and follow up with permit and site documentation. No additional conditions or contractual requirements were announced at the meeting.
