Lake Havasu City — The City Council on March 24 approved an affiliation agreement that will rebrand and expand the city’s youth basketball league as a Junior Suns/Junior Mercury program through a partnership with Suns Legacy Partners LLC and Phoenix Mercury Basketball LLC.
Parks & Recreation staff (Miss Farah) said the affiliation provides a structured curriculum, branding, reversible jerseys for players, coaches’ shirts, and equipment and marketing support. The department plans to start age divisions as young as 6 and cap initial divisions at about 60–70 participants to ensure adequate staffing and volunteers; staff said they will seek additional hires and volunteers, and may delay the start by a month to complete referees and background checks.
Council Member Michelle Lynn noted personal support for the program and asked about participant caps; staff cited an expected cap per division and ongoing recruitment of volunteer coaches. Council approved the affiliation 7–0 and authorized the city manager to execute the agreement.
City staff emphasized the partnership’s potential for special events and recognition and said participation details and timelines will be published once logistics and staffing are finalized.
