At its March 12 meeting the Fairfax County Architectural Review Board voted to ask county staff to notify the Board of Supervisors that the ARB wishes to participate as a consulting party in federal Section 106 reviews for two large planning efforts: the Dulles Airport southern‑quadrant redevelopment study and an I‑95 corridor study affecting Fairfax County.
Staff briefed the board on a Dulles environmental‑site analysis that models potential structures up to 100 feet tall in the county portion of the airport southern quadrant. The report concludes minimal impact to the closest historic resource (the Sully historic district), but staff recommended ARB participation so the board can review future refinements and concur with any effect determinations.
The board also discussed the I‑95 corridor study, which includes an archaeological survey and above‑ground structure inventory. Members noted that highway and redevelopment work can alter the setting of potentially eligible resources and that ARB participation early in the process enables timely comment. The board approved staff pursuing consulting‑party status for both efforts and will notify the Board of Supervisors accordingly; the votes were carried during the meeting.
