Mechanicsburg Area SD shifts K–12 science instruction toward STEELS/NGSS and demonstrates phenomenon-based lessons

District science leaders and teachers presented a full update to K–12 science curriculum on Oct. 28, describing a multi-year effort to align instruction to STEELS (science, technology, engineering, environmental literacy and sustainability) and to emphasize three-dimensional science learning.
Dr. Einstein and colleagues said the revision was rooted in the National Research Council’s K–12 framework and the Next Generation Science Standards and seeks to move classrooms from memorizing facts to engaging students in problem solving, scientific practices and crosscutting concepts. The district compiled 104 grade-band curriculum maps organized around performance expectations, core ideas and transfer goals.
As part of the presentation, teachers led a slinky demonstration to show how a short, observable phenomenon can hook students’ curiosity and drive inquiry. Teachers described follow-up modeling tasks, performance expectations and an emphasis on student-created models. Abby and Lindsay (teachers who co-design lessons) described early discomfort among students with inquiry-style instruction and noted that repeated exposure and intentional grouping has led to higher engagement and success among previously reluctant students; several teachers said students who began in level-three courses progressed into AP electives over time.
Administrators emphasized the district’s investment in professional development, including out-of-district training, to support the instructional shift; the 104 curriculum maps and related professional-development work were presented to the board and are scheduled for board approval at the next meeting.
Board members asked how the shift affects factual knowledge (for example, recall of dates or periodic table facts); staff responded that factual knowledge remains part of instruction but performance tasks and transfer goals are broader measures of student learning.
