Monta Loma students demonstrate 'RAD' recess leadership program at board meeting

At the April 16 board meeting the district showcased Monta Loma Elementary's RAD (Recess Activity Director) program. Principal Megan Jin Gooji introduced the school's counselor ("Mr. Joe") and STEAM teacher (Mrs. Choang) and turned the floor over to student leaders who described their roles leading recess activities, modeling inclusive play, using Kelso's Choice to resolve disputes and Rochambeau for quick tie-breakers.
Student presenters explained that RAD leaders undergo training, shadow experienced leaders, and coordinate shifts to support younger students in kindergarten through second grade. The program includes post-shift check-ins, teacher follow-up and periodic surveys of leaders to monitor wellbeing and program sustainability. Principal Jin Gooji and staff said they plan ongoing teacher communication and periodic check-ins to maintain program standards and measure impact.
Board members thanked the students and staff and the board paused briefly for photos before continuing regular business.
