City staff told the Petaluma Airport Commission that the first round of hangar fire inspections is scheduled for March 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the fire marshal and likely the assistant fire marshal leading inspections of hangar rows 1–3.
Why it matters: Fire inspections can identify safety deficiencies that may require contractor work or tenant corrections and can affect hangar access and scheduling.
Staff (Gina) said the fire marshal will issue deficiency reports. Staff explained they will prioritize highest safety issues first and coordinate with the fire marshal on timelines and the need for contractors or parts. Tenants were notified they do not need to be present but may attend; airport attendant Joel will escort inspectors into hangars if access is needed.
Commissioners raised related points: ensuring fire extinguishers are current and whether inspections should be scheduled more regularly. Staff said frequency can depend on extinguisher type and that the fire marshal will advise on maintenance schedules. The March 12 effort was described as a pilot; staff will work with the fire marshal to schedule subsequent inspection days for remaining hangar rows based on time needed.
No formal action was taken at the meeting. Staff will report inspection results and any deficiency lists to the commission after the fire marshal completes the inspections.
