Michael reported that on March 11 he, Alex, Ron and Marique completed the commission’s first round of a King Street dining and retail accessibility canvass, speaking with 13 businesses ranging from restaurants to retail stores. “We talked to 13 businesses,” Michael said, adding that reception was generally positive and that some businesses acknowledged longstanding accessibility issues.
Commissioners proposed concrete next steps: capturing contact information at each site for follow-up; including the commission’s handout in business-license renewal packets so every business receives accessibility guidance; and identifying one or two downtown businesses to highlight as exemplars in future media outreach or interview-style pieces. Commissioners discussed refining the outreach script to invite more substantive conversations beyond brief handouts and suggested preparing a short questionnaire to record ADA compliance details.
Scheduling was discussed: commissioners preferred a Wednesday afternoon for the next canvass and suggested targeting dates in mid-April, avoiding the week of Easter and local spring break. Michael agreed to coordinate dates and logistics by email with interested commissioners.
No formal action was taken; the session was a progress report and an operational planning discussion.
