The Petaluma Airport Commission on the evening’s agenda nominated a commission representative to sit on the initial interview panel for the city’s airport manager recruitment.
Staff recommended that one commissioner with civil aviation and operations expertise join the city hiring team to help vet candidates. Gina Benedetti Petnick, assistant director of public works, told the commission the recruitment will open next week, run for four weeks and that the first interview panel is expected in April; a second interview would follow later in April and a hiring decision was anticipated in May. "It will be open for 4 weeks and close in March," Benedetti Petnick said, noting the first panel date will require the commission nominee to hold that date open.
Commissioners discussed why the commission’s involvement was requested for the first, more structured vetting interview but not for the later "fit" interview. Benedetti Petnick said the city typically reserves fit interviews for staff because they focus on internal coordination and departmental fit. "The second interview tends to be more of a fit type of interview…we felt that that fit interview was most appropriately conducted by city staff," she said.
After brief discussion about candidates and scheduling, the Chair moved to nominate a commissioner as the commission’s representative; the motion was seconded and approved by the commissioners present. The Chair also asked staff to allow a named alternate to stand in if the nominee became unavailable between now and the April interview date.
Next steps: the city will open the application period next week for approximately four weeks, staff and HR will screen applicants for minimum qualifications, the initial interview panel will convene in April, and the commission’s nominee will represent the body at that first-stage panel. The commission did not record an exact roll-call tally for the nomination vote in the transcript; staff recorded the motion as approved.
The commission’s choice and the application-opening date will be noted in the formal staff report and posted to the city’s recruitment listings.
