Dubois County sheriff seeks in‑house psychiatric residency; board approves security center maintenance contract

Sheriff Tom Kleinhelter told the Dubois County Commissioners on April 20 that 59 inmates are currently housed at the county security center and that the department is recruiting deputies, with seven candidates under consideration for three openings. Kleinhelter said early discussions have begun with a medical school to create a residency program that would bring a psychiatric physician in‑house; a memorandum of understanding is being prepared and will be reviewed by legal counsel.
Kleinhelter also reported public safety concerns near the Crossvine Solar site along 800 S, noting there are no speed limit signs posted and that county ordinance default speeds apply when signage is absent. He asked County Engineer Levi Leffert to review the area for signage and driveway‑entrance concerns.
The board approved a Preventative Maintenance Agreement with Messmer Mechanical at a cost of $9,985 to cover chillers, boilers, air handlers, kitchen hoods and exhaust systems, mini‑split systems and water pumps at the security center; the motion to approve the agreement pending receipt of final contract documents was seconded and carried unanimously.
Kleinhelter said the department is exploring a demonstration purchase of a remote‑controlled lawn mower for a steep hillside and does not anticipate new vehicle purchases this year.
