Tehama County approves temporary extra-help senior appraiser position to meet 2026 roll closure

The Tehama County Board of Supervisors approved the assessor’s request March 10 to appoint an extra-help senior appraiser to support appraisal completion and staff training needed to meet the county’s mandated roll-closure date of July 1, 2026.
Burley Phillips, Tehama County Assessor, said the extra-help candidate is an experienced senior appraiser who can immediately assist with appraisals across property types while training others. Phillips said the position will sunset June 30, 2026; funding for up to $15,000 was included in the assessor’s approved budget.
The board moved and seconded the appointment and approved it by roll call (Supervisor Hansen, Supervisor Zane, Supervisor Burrows, Vice Chair Jones and Chair Walker voting yes).
Why it matters: The assessor’s office said it is understaffed and needs immediate help to meet statutory roll-closure deadlines that affect tax assessments and billing. The temporary appointment is intended to cover a staffing shortfall without creating a long-term position.
Next steps: Personnel will complete pre-employment requirements and the appointee will begin work upon successful clearance; the position will expire June 30, 2026.
