Staff reported that a localized bacterial contamination (not E. coli) was detected after water distribution work and the reintroduction of stored pipe during recent reconstruction projects. To address the finding, the city has been chlorinating the water supply and running more frequent laboratory tests.
According to staff, the laboratory results this week were negative, and officials said they would continue to follow Minnesota Department of Health guidance before ending the precautionary chlorination. Staff also described operational measures to avoid waste: crews have been reusing chlorinated water from tankers to flood neighborhood hockey rinks while the system remains under treatment.
Staff emphasized that routine biweekly lab testing was already in place and that the detected organism was not the kind (for example, E. coli) that would trigger a boil-water advisory. They also said the type of issue is not uncommon during road reconstruction when pipe stored at job sites can collect debris and allow bacteria to be introduced if not thoroughly flushed before use. The EDA and council indicated they would coordinate with public works and the health department regarding the timing of any dechlorination and public messaging.
No public-health advisory was issued, and staff reported cleanup steps and negative lab results during the meeting.
