Facilities director reports progress on 20 summer projects; East Montgomery track delayed by weather

The Montgomery County School Board received an update on the division’s summer facilities work from Director of Facilities Dr. Mike Brown, who said crews completed most projects and have three still in progress.
"This year we had 20 projects that we undertook this summer across all of our sites," Dr. Brown said. He listed major work including the Christiansburg High School addition (celebrated with a ribbon-cutting), roof replacements at Kips and Auburn elementary schools, installation of electronic school signs, paving and parking improvements at the operations center and repaving at Christiansburg Primary School.
Dr. Brown told trustees the East Montgomery high-school track is about 75% complete but that weather has delayed application of the rubberized coating, which must be laid under favorable, dry conditions. He said the district is coordinating with the contractor and school leadership to find an appropriate window for curing and application to avoid disrupting fall athletics.
The director also described progress on a fuel-center project at the operations center — custom double-walled tanks with longer manufacturing lead times — and said crews had installed new windows at Montgomery Central as part of a phased upgrade. Kips Elementary’s roof is at the warranty stage; air sampling for prior mold concerns returned results within acceptable limits and additional cleaning was performed as a precaution.
Board members pressed for completion timelines on the fuel tanks and track; Dr. Brown said fuel-center work should ramp up in September with finalization by late October and that track completion hinges on a suitable multi-day weather window.
Trustees asked administration to include stadium and outdoor-facility conditions in a forthcoming facilities-study request to the county board of supervisors. The board also praised staff for rapid turnover on a large set of summer projects and for getting schools ready for the new school year.
