Commission approves Juneteenth celebration at Waven; organizers to limit event to outdoor lawn

Susan Borst, vice president of Standing Together Against Racism, asked the commission to approve a special‑event permit to hold a Juneteenth celebration on the west lawn of Waven.
“We have submitted the special event permit with Tucker… everything’s looking good,” Borst said, adding the group had a site visit on Feb. 5 and the board of selectmen approved up to six food trucks. She said organizers plan a live band, merchandising, about three 10‑by‑10 canopies (not full tents), three portable toilets (one ADA‑compliant) and hand‑washing stations; the event will be outdoors only and will proceed rain or shine.
Commissioners confirmed that food trucks must obtain health‑department permits and noted insurance language had been amended to add the town as an additional insured. Staff and organizers said police will have a presence at the event but will not provide active traffic control unless circumstances warrant; organizers will monitor cleanup to ensure the lawn is cleared for a wedding the next day.
A motion to approve the permit was seconded (second named Tim) and carried by voice vote. Organizers said they will continue coordinating with fire, police and the health department and will submit final vendor lists for inspection.
