Board reviews finalist for secondary history teacher; contract contingent on licensure

Superintendent Kelly Stickel told the board that a nationwide search for a secondary history teacher produced 32 applicants; five finalists were advanced to an interview committee and the committee recommended one candidate, Jonathan Lashana.
"We had candidates from all over the country...it was a highly competitive field," Stickel said, noting finalists included applicants from Boston, Alaska, California and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Stickel said Lashana taught history at the AP level, served as a student-success liaison and would bring collaboration and relationship-driven practice to the secondary team.
Board members asked whether Lashana would relocate, what certifications were required for Washington state history instruction, and how the candidate’s references described his work. Stickel said Lashana has family in the region, has worked in Alaska and Michigan, and that a contract would be contingent on completing Washington licensure requirements and a full fingerprint/background check. She said Washington typically allows a year for some licensing steps for out-of-state transfers.
No formal vote to hire was recorded on the public record at this meeting; Stickel said she would bring a contract forward for board review once background checks and licensing steps are complete.
