Moss (firm), Taylor Carter (associate) and Carol Hooks as solicitors for Newton County Probate Court when the district attorney's office cannot staff traffic/probate dockets. The board voted to approve the resolution.
Grants: The Newton County Sheriff’s Office received board approval to apply for the FY25 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) in the amount of $30,929; the presenter said no local match is required and the grant is budgeted.
Public works and procurement: The board awarded a River Ridge Trail culvert replacement contract to Peach State Construction as the low bidder at $125,850 and approved a separate Ellington Road 48-inch cover contract to QX Ground at $78,361.80. Both awards were approved unanimously.
Programs and planning: The board authorized the use of $5,885 in ARPA funds to engage the Carl Vinson Institute of Government to facilitate a Sequential Intercept Mapping (SIM) event. Commissioners also approved engaging the Northeast Georgia Regional Commission to update the county comprehensive plan after staff reported it offered the lowest quote.
Personnel/budget: The board approved a budget transfer from contingency to fund two deputy clerk positions for magistrate court; staff and commissioners confirmed the positions were included in the 2026 budget.
