KK Yell, speaking for the applicant, said the outdoor displays are intended to support seasonal sales and customer service. Commissioners and members of the public raised concerns about the visual effect along McCain and other frontages. Commissioner Chambers said the line of storage buildings and display trailers made the intersection look "a bit trashy" and warned against setting a precedent that would encourage similar displays across other stores.
A member of the public also reported that some of the display sheds had become places where "the disadvantaged" sleep overnight; staff said they would notify store management about the concern. Yell and staff said products would be kept neat, screened by landscaping where applicable, and located outside fire lanes.
The commission voted to approve the request with one recorded dissent. Staff noted that other stores on the corridor already held special uses and that ongoing enforcement and site management would be necessary to avoid unintended impacts.
What happens next: Store management will be notified to address reported sheltering activity and staff will monitor compliance with conditions and screening requirements.
