The City Council read a proclamation recognizing Lunar New Year and declaring Feb. 17, 2026 a day of celebration in Pleasant Hill.
The proclamation, read by the mayor, noted the holiday’s importance to Asian communities and included a statement condemning anti-Asian discrimination heightened during the COVID-19 pandemic. The proclamation also encouraged residents to join in cultural observances and community events.
Dr. Andrea Medina, coordinator of an Asian-American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander learning community at Diablo Valley College, accepted the recognition on behalf of DVC. "This award is not about one person or one program," Medina said, adding that more than 1,300 students at DVC identify as AAPI and that the college’s Lunar New Year festival on Saturday, Feb. 21 is free and open to the public with cultural performances, food and a day market.
Council members and Dr. Medina confirmed the festival will run from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and include lion dancing and a day market across from the campus. Dr. Medina thanked community partners including the Contra Costa Chinese School and invited residents to attend.
No formal council action was required beyond adoption of the proclamation.
