Superintendent Dr. Stage told the Athens Area School District board that the district’s final transportation costs for the 2024–25 school year totaled about $2.5 million, roughly in line with the $2.6 million the district had budgeted.
"2.5 million was the actual," Dr. Stage said when reviewing the transportation section, adding the district had budgeted about $2.6 million and expects partial reimbursement from the state. "As long as they pass the budget, we'll get maybe 60% of that back," he told the board.
Dr. Stage explained that the district’s rural geography and road conditions make vans and contracted services the largest transportation expenses. "We only have six contractors... the biggest cost we have is obviously with vans," he said, noting the challenges of serving a rural area where smaller vehicles are often the only feasible option.
Board members approved the transportation report and associated items by roll call. District staff indicated they will prepare the documentation needed to seek state reimbursement once the state budget is finalized.
What happens next: the business office will prepare and file reimbursement claims and the board will review any additional budget implications at or before the next regular meeting on Aug. 12.
