Athens Area School District board approves routine business, new AI policy and personnel transfer

The Athens Area School District board on Tuesday approved a slate of routine financial, personnel and contract items, took a second reading of a new district AI policy and set its next meeting for Aug. 12.
The most consequential administrative item was a personnel transfer under Act 93 that moves a principal to Lynch Elementary effective the next day; the board approved the transfer as part of its personnel motions. The board also approved the district’s standard personnel listings, which include several resignations and supplemental and athletic contracts.
Superintendent Dr. Stage told the board the district’s charter-school payments year to date total "$1.49 million," and said another month of invoices will likely push the total over $1.5 million for the year. He presented standard financial materials — bills, the general fund and cafeteria checks, earned income-tax receipts and the treasury report — and the board approved the financial package by roll call.
Board members also approved contracts and agreements presented at the meeting, including a BLAST IU70 OA agreement described as relating to digital signage and two Title I service agreements with St. Agnes and Epiphany. District staff characterized those agreements as unchanged from last year and executed through the host district arrangement.
During the policy section the board conducted second readings (items A through M) with no edits. Members discussed a proposed AI policy; the board described the document as a new policy and "a starting point" for how the district will address generative AI in operations and instruction. Board members said other districts had asked to see Athens Area SD’s draft as they develop their own guidance.
