During the public-comment portion of the Hopewell Area School District work session, residents delivered two focused appeals to trustees.
Jan (resident) described how inclusive extracurriculars and classroom supports have benefited a student named Danica, citing participation in varsity swimming, band and the school musical as formative experiences that increased confidence and social connection. Jan asked the district to "support, encourage, and expand" inclusive programming so students who learn differently can participate "not only after school, but in classrooms and daily experiences as well." The speaker singled out coaches and teachers by name for fostering belonging and credited them with helping the student form friendships and skills.
A separate public commenter who said they are heavily involved in youth sports urged trustees to consider athletic- and community-use impacts of the consolidation plan. The commenter noted the district currently operates multiple gymnasiums (about seven across schools) for in-school and after-school activities and warned that consolidating facilities could leave community athletics and after-school use constrained. They asked the board to consider parking and scheduling needs, noting that the proposed site plan shows roughly 186 on-site spaces and relies on remote lots for larger events.
Board members acknowledged both points and asked administration and the design team to return with more detailed analyses on how the proposed facility will accommodate inclusive programs, event parking, and after-school athletics. No board action on policy or programming was taken during the public comment period; both items were routed for follow-up.
