County honors volunteers; officials highlight 60,000 hours of service

The Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors and county staff honored volunteers April 14 who support county operations across departments, from parks and animal services to public safety and public health.
Nicole Coburn, the county executive officer, introduced the Volunteer Initiative recognition. Rodney Sellers and Christina Thurston of the Volunteer Center noted that volunteers contributed roughly 60,000 hours of county service in the prior year, a value the presenter estimated at about $2.3 million. The board presented certificates to individuals and teams who supported projects including the Pace Trail at Quail Hollow Ranch County Park, animal-shelter enrichment programs, the Public Defenders Office internship work, the Safe Use and Overdose Prevention Program and the sheriffs forensic lab.
Board members thanked volunteers for their time and emphasized the importance of the volunteer pipeline for sustaining county operations; supervisors joined volunteers for a group photograph and post-meeting refreshments.
The recognitions underscored the range of county volunteer roles and the staff time volunteers save across departments.
