Board approves in concept multi-way stop at 6th Avenue and Bonnie Street

The Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors approved in concept April 14 an ordinance amending County Code sections 9.28.020 and 9.28.030 to designate the intersection of 6th Avenue and Bonnie Street as a multi-way stop.
Assistant Director of Public Works Steve Weisner presented traffic analysis showing the intersection met a sight-distance warrant and described the installation plan, which would add stop signs on the 6th Avenue legs. Staff asked the board to approve the concept so a final-adoption hearing could be scheduled for April 28 and required public-notice steps could be completed.
Supervisor Koenig asked about funding and whether more neighborhoods could access such safety improvements. Weisner said neighborhoods typically share costs with the county and sometimes donors cover the full expense; he noted the county matches half the installation cost and currently funds allow roughly three to four speed-bump installations per year. Weisner said the county is evaluating lower-cost bolt-down rubber speed bumps to spread budget further.
Supervisor Cummings moved the recommended action; Supervisor Koenig seconded. The clerk called the roll and the motion passed 5-0.
Staff said, if the board approves final adoption at the April 28 hearing, the Division of Public Works will install necessary signing and striping within 31 days after final adoption.
