Esports playoff berth and district math honors highlighted at board meeting

At the meeting, Katherine Leo, a high‑school biology teacher and head coach of the district esports program, told the board the spring season included 43 active students across grades 8–12 on 17 teams and that the district qualified for playoffs in every league; she said the Mario Kart team is expected to compete in championships at Syracuse University on May 2 and invited the public to watch streams on the university's Twitch channel.
The board also recognized Math League and Mathcon students. Presenters called up top performers from across elementary and middle schools: Ethan Lingeroski was named regionally first in Math League and did not miss a problem across five events; several students (Abene Baker, Noah McGawan, Steven Fam, Sloan Bower and others) were honored for regional placements; and Aaliyah First (Gillette Road Middle) was named the district Mathcon champion. Teacher Joe Andrews (KWS Barro Elementary) was noted for exceptional work coaching Mathcon participants.
Board members and administrators praised student accomplishments and presented a commemorative jacket to the recognized teacher. The recognition segment emphasized both individual achievement and districtwide participation in math competitions and extracurricular programs.
