The Lee County Board of Education on Feb. 10 voted unanimously to adopt a resolution opting out of the statewide floating homestead exemption that had been passed as House Bill 581 and codified into state law.
Dr Tru, the district superintendent, recommended the resolution, saying the measure is intended to "stay as status quo" and that exempting the district from the statewide provision would not alter any resident's existing homestead exemption. The board then motioned, seconded and approved the resolution; the vote was recorded as 5 to 0.
Board members did not identify a formal mover or seconder in the public record and had no additional public amendments. The resolution, discussed by staff as an opt-out under the state law referred to in the presentation, was described by administration as a measure to maintain the district's current local tax treatment while the district continues to monitor the state budget and the local tax digest.
The action came near the end of the meeting after routine personnel and consent agenda items were approved. The board's staff noted that any future changes to local revenue forecasts or state actions could prompt additional review by the board.
The board announced its next regular business meeting for Monday, March 10, 2025.
