The New Brunswick City Council on April 15 voted to authorize the sale of a portion of city-owned property along northbound Route 1 to the New Jersey Department of Transportation in connection with a Route 1 bridge project.
Council President Gastana said the parcel consists of approximately 1,349 square feet along the northbound side of Route 1 near the Regency Apartments and that the agreed sale price is $60,000. Mr. Shammy (staff) confirmed the parcel is adjacent to the Regency Apartments on the northbound side and is intended to allow NJDOT to complete necessary bridge improvements.
A member of the public (Mr. TK) asked for a more precise location and said that 1,300 square feet alone did not clarify where the parcel is; staff replied they would provide more detail as needed. The council opened the ordinance for a five‑minute public hearing, heard no additional speakers, then moved and approved the ordinance on second reading.
The council’s action authorizes the sale to NJDOT and allows the state transportation agency to proceed with the Route 1 bridge project using the purchased parcel. Staff indicated they will provide more precise parcel mapping and placement information to the public upon request.
