District 99 honors athletes, DECA and speech finalists at the April meeting

The District 99 board took time early in its April meeting to honor student achievements across athletics and activities.
Gymnastics: Principals and coaches introduced the cooperative gymnastics team and head coach Kristen Campos and assistant Kylie. Seniors and team members were recognized for placing at state meets; the board highlighted a state beam champion, multiple state placings and a four‑trophy run over four years. Senior student speakers Emily, Kayn and Lauren each thanked coaches (including "Coach Bill") and described the team as a family.
DECA: Administrators recognized Downers Grove South and North qualifiers for DECA Nationals in Atlanta. Sarah, a sophomore who qualified with a partner, thanked advisers and celebrated rapid program growth; administrators noted more than 50 state qualifiers and 226 total DECA members across the program.
Cross country, cheer and basketball: Coach John Sipple recognized Philip Supio, who was named the Gatorade cross‑country athlete of the year for Illinois; he will run collegiately at Virginia. Maya Nicholson (all‑state cheer) and Campbell Thulan (all‑state basketball honors) were noted for state recognition; coaches praised leadership and long hours of preparation.
Swim and dive: Luke Connley and others were recognized for state placements and school records; coaches described record‑setting performances and competitive seasons despite illness at state meets.
Speech: Coach Justin Makovich celebrated a state runner‑up team finish and multiple individual placers, including Nate Clinton (state champion in original comedy). Students said the program builds community and communication skills that extend beyond high school.
Why it matters: Administrators framed the recognitions as examples of student dedication and the district's strong extracurricular programs. May dates for senior awards, prom and decision day were also shared as part of the celebration.
