Wixom honors Councilmember Robert Smiley as he departs for county board

WIXOM, Mich. — The Wixom City Council on Dec. 17 presented Councilmember Robert Smiley with a proclamation honoring his nearly nine years of service after he resigned to take a seat on the Oakland County Board of Commissioners.
Mayor Beagle read the proclamation citing Smiley's service with local groups and several city milestones, including updated branding and negotiated employee contracts. Councilmember Smiley came forward to accept the recognition and introduced family members in the audience.
Smiley told the council he had completed an exit interview and was "touched" by the recognition. He thanked staff, legal counsel and residents for their support. "I've tried to make decisions that reflect the values of our town and I hope I've lived up to that goal," Smiley said. He added that he will bring lessons learned on council to his new county role.
The council offered congratulations and holiday wishes. Deputy Mayor Resnik thanked the Welsh family for a donation of land to complete a sidewalk segment, noting the contribution will help finish a long-standing gap in the city's pedestrian network.
The council did not take any formal action related to Smiley's resignation at the meeting; the proclamation and public remarks were ceremonial. Members repeatedly praised city staff for operations and recent projects, and the meeting closed with a motion to adjourn and light refreshments.
Smiley's departure and the donated parcel noted by Deputy Mayor Resnik were among the few agenda items highlighted during the council comments portion of the meeting; no timeline for filling the council vacancy was announced during the session.
