Chesterfield County School Board members used the opening portion of the Sept. 9 meeting to recognize school and district achievements.
Mr. Smith announced Carver College and Career Academy and Midlothian High School received the Virginia High School League 'Stay in the Game' award for sportsmanship across seasons. Falling Creek Elementary was honored as one of America’s Healthiest Schools for its work improving nutrition, food access and social-emotional supports; principal Rashad Johnson and staff described an outdoor classroom and partnerships with master gardeners, therapy-dog programming and targeted grants.
Career and technical education programs across the district won several awards at the state level (Creating Excellence Awards) and students placed at state and national competitions in DECA, FBLA, HOSA, FFA, SkillsUSA and other organizations; advisers and students described how CTE programs prepare students for careers and higher education. The board also thanked community partners Dominion Energy and Centra Health for sponsoring an event that distributed more than 12,000 books to county children.
Multiple teachers, advisers and students from high schools and the career-technical center spoke from the podium, describing programs, competitive successes and the role of community partnerships in fostering career readiness and student opportunity.
