Board approves redistricting plan to shift 119 students as new Benley Elementary opens in 2026

Chesterfield County School Board members voted Sept. 9 to approve a redistricting plan intended to rebalance enrollment between Falling Creek Elementary and the replacement Benley Elementary scheduled to open in August 2026.
Staff told the board Falling Creek Elementary is operating at over 130% of program capacity and recommended reallocating students to the new Benley facility to reduce the number of students in temporary classrooms (trailers). The staff presentation said 119 students currently assigned to Falling Creek would be reassigned to Benley if the board adopted the proposal. After discussion, the board moved, seconded and approved memo 125-25 by roll call.
Dr. Watica (staff presenter) said construction of the replacement Benley Elementary is continuing and the additional seats will allow the district to balance capacity across nearby schools. Superintendent Dr. Murray announced a community meeting on redistricting for the new Deep Creek Elementary on Sept. 30 at 6:00 p.m. at Deep Creek Middle School for parents and residents to review options and ask questions.
The board’s approval directs staff to proceed with the plan as presented; transportation, parent notifications and implementation timelines were referenced as next steps in the superintendent’s remarks and in the work-session materials.
