Board reviews two elementary rezoning packages tied to new and rebuilt schools; vote to follow

District staff presented two separate redistricting conversations at the Sept. 9 work session tied to construction and rebuilding projects.

Benley and Falling Creek: Staff said Falling Creek Elementary is operating at about 130% program capacity and using 21 classroom trailers; the rebuilt Benley Elementary will open with a higher design and program capacity (about 900). The proposal would move roughly 119 students living north of Chippenham Parkway (named neighborhoods and apartment complexes cited in staff maps) from Falling Creek into Benley, which staff said would eliminate about seven trailers at Falling Creek and put Benley at roughly 82% of capacity while Falling Creek would move to about 113%.

West Area Elementary: For the western part of the county, staff presented two zoning options for the new West Area Elementary (design capacity ~1,000) intended to relieve Mosley and Woolridge, both currently above program capacity. Option 1 would unite several subdivisions and backfill Grange Hall with a center‑based gifted (CBG) program; Option 2 shifts different neighborhood blocks with similar goals. Staff noted growth projections in the western pipeline and cautioned that some schools could return to overcapacity within a five‑year housing scenario; a public information session is set for Sept. 30 at Deep Creek Middle School.

Board members discussed bell‑tier alignment, waiver rights for rising fifth graders, transportation distance changes and demographic impacts; staff said demographic shifts from the proposed moves are minimal. The board will consider the Benley/Falling Creek rezoning for a vote that evening and will carry the West Area options through community meetings and further study.
