The Brown Deer Village Board on April 20 voted to adopt Ordinance 2604, a new property‑maintenance code that sets minimum standards for appearance and condition of residential and nonresidential properties and clarifies enforcement pathways for litter, deteriorated buildings and similar nuisances.
Staff and the beautification/public‑works committee said the new code is intended to give the property‑code enforcement specialist clearer standards and to improve compliance while allowing for enforcement when needed. Several public commenters had urged clearer guidance about how the code would treat natural or native landscaping and swales; staff recommended tabling two related ordinance items (C and D) to meet with residents and refine application language. The board agreed by consensus to table those related items and proceeded to adopt Ordinance 2604 on roll call.
The board also adopted Ordinance 267, an update to Chapter 46 on solid‑waste and recycling drafted to match DNR sample language; staff said approval preserves roughly $44,000 annually in DNR funding for the village’s recycling program and that the ordinance needed to be approved by April 30 to maintain eligibility.
