Smithfield committee approves policy and hiring templates, plans policy committee work
Summary
The committee approved formation of district study committees (policy committee), adopted templates for a CTE advisor, guidance coordinators and part-time HR/facilities/fundraising roles, and agreed to rewrite the student dress-code policy.
At its June 26 meeting the Smithfield School Committee moved to create district study committees and approved a slate of job-template items to enable recruitment and clearer role definitions amid the budget uncertainty.
Superintendent recommended standing study committees — for example a policy committee composed of administrators, teachers, possibly students, and one or two school committee liaisons — to systematically review and revise policies. The committee voted to approve the formation of a policy committee and to authorize staff to move forward with membership and work plans.
The committee also approved a template for a CTE-advisor site (an extra-duty high-school teacher role that could perform CTE advising duties if a dean position is reduced), a guidance-coordinator template, and a part-time human-resources/facilities-management/fundraising template (an at-will, up-to-19-hours-per-week position, with the superintendent suggesting the role could be trialed and potentially partially self-funded through advertising revenue). The templates were approved by motion and voice vote to allow advertising and recruitment.
On policy work, the superintendent advised the dress-code policy would require a full rewrite rather than a routine first reading; staff will bring a revised draft to a future meeting after principals and stakeholders review alternatives.
