DDA board hears committee reports, event calendar and downtown updates

At the April 22 meeting, the Historic Lapeer Main Street Downtown Development Authority received a series of committee and staff reports covering fundraising, grant awards, placemaking and events.
Outreach committee members said they are drafting funding-level language and sponsorship recognition tiers and hope to finalize materials in May. The business development committee reported six grant applications (up from zero days before the deadline) and said two applicants were selected using MEDC scorecard criteria; downtown-dollar redemptions were reported at about $400 out of $1,000 sold to date.
Placemaking committee members discussed an environment grant received through Michigan Main Street, bike-rack options reviewed with Rodney Church of the parks department and a plan to produce two-foot cedar planters for downtown businesses (batch production and modest per-unit costs discussed). The Center for the Arts previewed a busy schedule (including the Main Street Art Association spring show opening May 8), reported 91 patrons for classes and 524 patrons for ticketed events in the reporting period, and announced Arcelia Zamaripa as a new artistic associate.
Staff updated the board on downtown logistics: back parking lot 9 is closed for milling and temporary 15-minute parking signs were placed to encourage turnover; DPW repaired string lights and bulbs in the pocket park and the board discussed removing rocks and replacing them with mulch via a volunteer effort with the parks department. Staff also reported they will seek mobile-tour inclusion when the national Main Street conference comes to Detroit in 2027.
Board members closed the meeting with announcements about new businesses and community events, including a fire-extinguisher check day scheduled for 9 a.m. April 29 at the courthouse pavilion (fee and vendor name discussed).
