Fairfax County will use license-plate readers on county vehicles to bolster vehicle tax compliance

Fairfax County announced it will deploy license-plate reader cameras on county vehicles to identify potentially unregistered vehicles and improve compliance with state registration and local tax requirements, a county agency official said.

The county described the program as a tax-compliance measure intended to promote fairness by helping ensure that vehicles that regularly garage within Fairfax County are properly registered and taxed. The official said the system is not intended for law enforcement use and that data would not be shared with police or outside agencies.

According to the county presentation, staff will operate county vehicles equipped with roof-mounted cameras that scan license plates while driving through neighborhoods. The scans are intended to flag potentially unregistered vehicles parked in residential areas so county staff can confirm registration status.

The county said collected data will be stored securely while staff verify whether a vehicle is properly registered with the county; if a vehicle is confirmed as registered, the county said the vehicle’s data is promptly removed from county records. The county framed those steps as part of a process designed to limit retention and secondary use of the information.

The announcement described the rollout as a way to make enforcement of registration and local vehicle-tax rules "smarter, safer and more efficient." The county did not specify a start date for the program, staffing levels, the technical vendor, or whether the county will publish retention schedules or independent audits of the system in the announcement.
