Board hears first reading to expand alternative‑education placements to all grades

The Rowan County Board of Education took a first reading April 21 on a proposal to change alternative‑education placement language so students at all grade levels may be served.
District staff told the board the change is intended to consolidate K–5 students who are presently enrolled in a virtual program into Round Academy within the district’s Infinite Campus student information system, aligning K–5 administrative records with the existing Grade 6–12 setup. "It will allow Round Academy virtual that our K through five students are currently enrolled in to be able to enroll them into Round Academy that has all of our 6 through 12 students in," staff said during the presentation.
Why it matters: The change is administrative and procedural but could alter how elementary virtual enrollments are recorded and managed. Because this was a first reading, the board did not take a final vote and planned further discussion at a future meeting.
Next steps: Staff will return with the item on a subsequent agenda for a second reading and potential adoption.
