Cabell County Schools highlights high-school art winners at board meeting

Dr. Ashley Stevens opened the board's special celebrations segment April 21 to showcase high-school visual and applied arts winners from Huntington High and Cabell Midland.
"It is wonderful to be with you," Dr. Stevens said in introducing the students and teachers who had competed locally, statewide and nationally. Teachers described juried shows, museum portfolio awards and national recognition for entries including duck-stamp and poppy-poster contests.
"Hello, I'm Leslie Smith. I'm head of the art department at Huntington High School," Leslie Smith told the board and listed recent wins, including first-, second- and third-place finishes at regional competitions and museum portfolio awards. Huntington teachers described a long list of contests in which students placed or advanced to higher-level exhibitions.
Cabell Midland staff reported multiple winners, students accepted to the Governor's School for the Arts and several students moving on to state shows. Board members invited the students for photos and publicly thanked teachers for their work.
The recognitions were primarily celebratory; no board action or funding decisions were made as part of the segment.
