The Brainerd City Finance Committee on Jan. 5 approved memorandums of agreement (MOAs) with the IBW union to implement Minnesota’s statewide paid family and medical leave program for represented employees in public utilities and administrative support.
Chris Schubert, HR director, said the new Minnesota law effective Jan. 1 establishes the statewide mandatory paid family medical leave program and that the League of Minnesota Cities advised municipalities to negotiate premium splits with represented employees. The IBW union submitted MOAs on Dec. 5 and staff revised the draft to align with prior council approvals for other unions. Schubert said the proposed MOAs do not change current city practice but formalize the mutual understanding between the city and the union.
Committee members asked about the premium split; staff confirmed the premium would be split 50/50 between the city and the represented employees, consistent with other recent agreements. A committee member moved to approve the MOAs; another seconded, and Chair Gabe Johnson called the vote. The motion carried.
The MOAs included in the packet covered the public utilities and administrative support units represented by the IBW; staff said they would finalize paperwork consistent with the agreements already in the packet.
