Yorktown reports UPK enrollment, hiring needs and construction progress ahead of the budget vote

Superintendent Dr. Hatter used the April 20 meeting to provide multiple operational updates: early childhood enrollment figures, current vacancies and hiring plans, an after‑school partnership, and construction progress at district elementary sites.

UPK: He reported 144 students fully registered for Universal Pre‑K with four pending, for 148 seats currently accounted for; he said approximately 40 UPK seats remain unfilled and encouraged eligible families (children who will be four by Dec. 1, 2026 and who reside in the district) to contact district registration.

Hiring: The district listed openings including a principal vacancy at Cromp and several elementary general and special‑education positions, as well as a middle‑school math posting. The district plans to move from a contracted safety monitor service to an in‑house model and said it will generally recruit retired law enforcement or military personnel for those roles.

After‑school care: The district announced a partnership with the YMCA of Central and Northern Westchester to provide elementary after‑school care; program details and monthly rates (example: $460 per month for a five‑day 6 p.m. pickup at Mohansic or Brookside) are posted on the YMCA website.

Construction: Additions at Mohansic and Brookside are largely enclosed with visible progress; the district reported rough electrical work should be completed shortly. The athletic field work is about a month behind schedule because of soil conditions and weather but still expected to be ready before the next fall season.

Community logistics and events: The superintendent reminded the public of the May 19 budget vote and May 11 in‑person voter registration event and promoted the district’s senior‑citizen breakfast on April 24 (9:00 a.m.). He provided a phone contact for reservations.
