APS outlines May 23 Education Appreciation night, June outreach expectations and a late‑August State of the District plan

Albuquerque Public Schools staff told the Community Engagement Committee on April 21 that the district is continuing event planning for multiple community initiatives, including an APS Education Appreciation night at a New Mexico United soccer game, guidance for June outreach expectations and preliminary plans for a late‑August State of the District.
Chief Communications Officer Johanna King said the May 23 APS Education Appreciation night will include a college and career fair with partners such as the University of New Mexico, Central New Mexico Community College, Sandia National Laboratories, trade unions and APS departments. King said East San Jose Elementary and Washington Middle School will invite bilingual‑seal students to escort players and serve as ball handlers; high‑school students will be invited to the college and career fair via counselors. "We encourage board members to help us spread the word," King said, and noted that ticket proceeds will benefit the APS Foundation.
On outreach expectations for June, staff clarified the distinction between "outreach" and "engagement" events: outreach events are hosted by community organizations that invite board members, while engagement events are organized by APS (or co‑hosted). Board members were asked to email quick post‑attendance notes to President Tommorito and copy staff to document outreach activity; staff said an event counts as an outreach event for reporting when two board members attend.
Separately, staff described early planning for a State of the District event late in August at Bernafasio to allow after‑school watch parties, improved livestream and potential panels featuring city and state education leaders plus student involvement. Staff said they are producing videos that can be used at back‑to‑school events and shared at the State of the District program.
Committee members offered promotional ideas (morning‑show segments, newsletters and principal/teacher outreach) and supported a room layout that places presenters facing the audience so the meeting feels like a community presentation rather than a dais‑style board meeting.
