Committee backs revised calendars that cut half days, increase instructional hours

The Springfield Township School District Academic Affairs Committee on April 20 reviewed revised three‑year school calendars that reduce the number of half days across the year and increase instructional time.
Dr. Yanicone told the committee the revisions cut total half days from 11 to 5 and preserve state requirements for days or hours of instruction. "We're seeing an increase in 14 hours of instruction at the elementary level, in 16 hours at the middle school, and in 19 hours at the high school," the presenter said, noting those changes maintain compliance with Pennsylvania requirements (which now allow either a days‑or‑hours standard).
Specific changes include removing one November conference half day while preserving a day‑and‑a‑half of conferences in Thanksgiving week, consolidating March conference half days into a single full conference day, adjusting some professional development days (making Oct. 30 a full day instead of a half day), and dropping one June half day to help with end‑of‑year scheduling. Committee members praised the larger, more readable calendar layout and discussed adding QR codes and newsletter links to help families subscribe to the district calendar.
The presenter said the three calendars for 2026–27, 2027–28 and 2028–29 will be placed on the full board agenda the following night for board action. Committee members expressed general support in the committee meeting.
