Committee approves Front Street flagpole modifications and hardwired lighting; BPU to install

Public Works Director Havagor told the committee that four flagpoles on Front Street and one on Laurel Street need modification to meet flagpole guidelines and recommended hardwired lighting for durability and maintenance reliability.
Havagor said the cost to install lowering devices is about $25 per pole and hardwiring is about $145 per pole for five poles. He noted that while solar lighting (roughly $40–$60 per unit) is an option, staff prefer hardwiring for consistent maintenance and quality. Havagor also thanked BPU staff for agreeing to install the hardwiring at no charge as a community benefit.
A council member moved to approve the purchase and installation; another member requested that fixtures be set to a 3,000 kelvin color temperature, which the council incorporated into the motion. The motion passed on a voice vote with no roll-call recorded. Staff said the total project will be under $1,000 and will allow flags to be lowered without removing poles.
The committee’s approval directs staff to proceed with acquiring lowering devices and hardwired lighting and to coordinate with BPU on installation.
