The Brainerd City Council voted Oct. 20 to approve the hiring of Paul Sandy as the city’s new Public Utilities Director, effective Nov. 4.
Personnel & Finance Committee chair Gabe Johnson outlined the terms: placement on step five of the public utilities director wage grid (equivalent to approximately $76.80 per hour), 40 hours of credited vacation on the hire date to accommodate a previously scheduled absence, and a one‑time $10,000 signing bonus that must be repaid if Sandy leaves before 24 months of service.
Johnson told council members that the committee interviewed one candidate and that public utility commissioners and council interviewers regarded the candidate favorably. "I thought the interview went excellent," Johnson said. The motion to approve the hire was moved by Johnson and seconded by Bevans; members voted in favor and the council welcomed Sandy.
Council also noted that Sandy will accrue vacation at the rate of employees who have completed six years of service, consistent with the negotiated terms.
The hiring is subject to standard hiring processes; council discussion did not identify outstanding objections.
